FAQ - Where can we get caustic soda/sodium hydroxide?

PDF Print E-mail

First of all, the terms sodium hydroxide and caustic soda refer to the same chemical. Caustic lye of soda is the solution of sodium hydroxide in water.

Sodium hydroxide usually is very cheap.

  • A promising source are hardware stores. There you will find sodium hydroxide to remove drain blockages. Make sure that no additives are included (as in most tube cleaners) - you need pure sodium hydroxide!
  • Another option is going to the pharmacy. Generally you will pay some more there.
  • Have a look into the internet for accessories for stripping of photoresist coated circuit boards. The development of these coatings is also done with sodium hydroxide.

And again the warning:

Sodium hydroxide is highly corrosive and can cause serious eye injuries. Use gloves when handling it and old clothes and always use protection googles! It is also advantageous if you place a bucket of tap water and a sponge near you so you will be able to wash immedately affected areas of the body in case of emergency.
Remember also that sodium hydroxide warms massively when dissolved in water. Stir it slowly in cold water.
